100 dancers in a day
Joy. Joy is something that we can never have enough of in our lives. Sadly, joy also seems to be in short supply for many people these days.
This small project is about joy.
On a Saturday in April of 2016, I set out to give the residents of Oakland, California a chance to strut their stuff. With the invaluable help of some amazing friends, I stretched a 35-foot cloth across a field at Lake Merritt. The goal was to photograph people as they danced, walked, jumped, rolled, biked, cartwheeled and crawled in front of (and at times behind) the backdrop.
I was hoping to get 100 people at the event (hence the title). By the end of our 12-hour day, more than 400 showed up and more than 250 participated in the shoot, including:
44 chldren | 15 dogs | 5 bikes | 4 strollers | 2 soccer players | 1 wheelchair | and an ice cream cart
